Beginning Sounds Worksheets for Kindergarten

Learning beginning sounds is one of the most important things students will be taught in kindergarten. Kindergarten beginning sounds worksheets should be fun and engaging which is why I created my Crack the Code Task Cards. These Crack the Code Task Cards are perfectly paired with Target Dollar Spot mini letter erasers. My Crack the Code Bundle is now complete with sight words for pre-primer, primer, first and second grade words, CVC, CVCE, R blends, L blends and S blends and 20 bonus digraph cards! There are over 500 task cards to use with your students throughout the year. The best part about these mini beginning sounds worksheets are that your students will become familiar with how to play the game and it will save you time from explaining the center when it changes.

How to Play:

The students will complete the task cards given by matching the beginning sound of the picture with the correct letter. For example, the task card above has a mermaid, umbrella, soccer ball and taco. Each one of those picture starts with a different beginning sound. It makes the word “must” and students can use mini erasers or write the word on the line, if you laminate the cards.

I like to give a certain amount of cards for my students depending on time. You can differentiate this per each students by pulling out sight words that each specific child needs practice with. There are also CVC and CVCE cards for students when they have learned all the sight words needed. The CVCE cards have a “magic e” picture showing that letter e does not make a sound in these words. Also, my bonus digraph cards when you buy the bundle includes 4 different pictures for digraphs sh, ch, th and wh.

I love using these as one of my literacy centers throughout the year. I change out the task cards inside as we progress through our phonics skills and standards. Towards the end of the year they are practicing blends.

I have included a key code for students that may need help with their beginning sounds and a word list of all the words included in each set.

How to organize:

I organize my task cards by placing them inside of the Michaels Recollection Photo& Craft Keeper, they come with 16 individual boxes inside in either white or rainbow! This makes it super easy to carry around the task boxes when students are using.

Also, included is a cover photo to place inside each individual box. This way you and your students know what is inside. The cover photo has the type of card that is it, ex. sight words and then the which set of sight words it is, ex. pre-primer. Each task card also has these titles in case the cards get mixed up, students can easily put away and fix correctly.

My favorite thing to do is to take empty task boxes and fill it with the letter manipulatives. The target mini letter erasers are my go to but magnetic letters, letter beads, letter tiles or foam letters work for the beginning sound worksheets.

I recommend grabbing the bundle because you get the most value with it. Not only do you get access to every set of task cards but you also save $8. The best part is the 20 digraph cards that are only access through the bundle. Click here to grab the BUNDLE!

If you want to give your students an extra bonus, check out my blog post about the Free Target Mini Eraser Game. This is a freebie that I will email you.
