My ABC Letter Song with Hand-motions

abc-letter-song

After getting our new curriculum, the first thing my Kindergarten team did was making an ABC letter song to go along with it. We’ve seen the benefits in having the students learn the letters and letter sounds with hand motions for each letter. We also wanted the hand motions to match the animals and objects that are in the curriculum. Secondly, we had to take into consideration that some letters have multiple sounds and making that work with the animal/ object. Lastly, the hand motions we wanted to be done with them sitting down so if they wouldn’t have to get up and move their body too much. After taking all of those steps we came up with the letter chant in the video below.

Some teachers taught the ABC letter song all at once while others only taught the letters that we’ve learned and added on. It is completely up to you how you want to introduce it to your students and class. I taught it during one of my 10min blocks, if you want to learn more about my 10/20 model click here.

One thing I used in the video was my ABC cards that have the letters in uppercase and lowercase on them as well as the picture of the animal or object. These cards are in my TPT store, I also include a full size sheet with all the letters that each of my students have to follow along with in the beginning of the year.
