Alphabet Worksheets and Task Cards

Alphabet worksheets & task cards are the perfect literacy center to have in your classroom to help your students learn letters, practice fine motor, and one to one correlation.

When I introduce letters in my classroom we typically spend about 2 to 3 weeks reviewing all the letters and letter sounds in our literacy block with songs, videos, repetition, handwriting, and during our morning meeting. Then, after those 2 to 3 weeks, we work on 1 to 2 letters a week in isolation.

During those first 2 to 3 weeks, we move pretty quickly through the letters as it meant to be an introduction and to allow the teacher to see who needs help with their letters, who knows all their letters, and what specific letters the class as a whole is struggling with. I always struggled with what literacy centers to use during this time that met all the needs in my class, especially those students who already came to kindergarten knowing their letter and letter sounds. This is what inspired me to create 16 different alphabet worksheets and task card games that focus on multiple different skills when it comes to letter/letter sounds, one to one correlation, fine motor skills, and more.

Alphabet Worksheets & Task Card Games

These 16 different alphabet task card games that focus on different skills. Some of the games like my Snap Cube Letters, students will build the letter with snap cubes and practice finding the matching letter which helps with fine motor and letter recognition. Another game, Tracing Letters, students practice tracing each uppercase and lowercase letter from top to bottom to help with handwriting and on the full-size alphabet worksheets, they write the letter on their own. My dot to dot game, student trace, and image and write the letter it starts with which practice letter sounds. Even some of the games include math skills like practicing one to one correlation when touching each circle and saying the letter name. Or making sure you write the letter 3 times and being able to count.

All the games have a variety of standards they cover to help a wide range of student needs. Some of the standards are:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.1.A
Print many upper- and lowercase letters.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.D
Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.A
Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.A
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.

How To Use And Play The Games:

The first thing you want to do is to introduce the games one at a time. Make sure you model how to play the game and use the materials before letting them use them. You want to be sure they are using and practicing their letters correctly.

One way to use the games is to assign task cards to different students depending on their needs at the beginning or throughout the year. Another way to use the game is to break it apart by letter. You can pull out specific alphabet worksheets and task cards each week depending on what letter you are teaching. Also, you can use it as a literacy center for students who need extra help with their letters. Lastly, you can use this in your guided reading group as a review for students that need it. Again, it can be adapted to fit the needs of your students in your classroom.
