Valentine’s Day Activities Your Kindergarteners Will Love

Valentine’s Day is a good excuse to mix in some different activities in the classroom. It’s a chance for kids to practice kindness, work on literacy and math, and have a little change of pace from the usual routine.

In my classroom, I try to keep our Valentine’s Day activities simple but engaging. That might mean counting candy hearts, retelling a story, writing cards, or pretending to work at a post office. These kinds of activities let students practice skills we work on all year while giving them something a little different to do for the day.

Valentine’s Day Activities

So, here are a few activities I like to use for Valentine’s Day, along with some resources that make planning easier:

Sweetheart Activities
These activities are simple! Students can do them independently or at a center, and they help practice fine motor skills, patterns, and a bit of reading all while fitting the Valentine’s theme. This Sweetheart Activity resource includes candy heart graphing (always a fave!) , directed drawings, and read the room activities. It’s packed with everything you need especially if you’re planning a classroom party!

Love Monster Book Companion
Reading Love Monster is always a hit. The companion activities let students retell the story, sequence events, and build vocabulary. I usually use these in small groups after reading the book aloud. Book companions are an excellent opportunity to boost comprehension, too!

Feed Me February
This resource is great for blending literacy and math. Students can practice counting, number recognition, and letters, all themed for February. It works well for small group instruction or independent centers. And, the fun faces make it a really fun way to practice math!

Dramatic Play: Valentine Post Office
I like setting up a post office in the classroom for Valentine’s Day. Students can write cards, “stamp” envelopes, and deliver them to classmates. It’s a simple way to practice writing, social skills, and imaginative play at the same time. This dramatic play set includes everything you need to get a post office set-up!

Group Activities & Partner Work
Valentine’s Day is a good chance for students to practice working together. You could pair students to complete a craft, sort hearts by color or size, or share a writing activity. It encourages collaboration and helps students build social skills.

Reflection & Social-Emotional Learning
Another favorite is to use Valentine’s Day to talk about feelings and friendships. You can even have students draw or share their ideas, tying it into social-emotional learning without turning it into a craft or worksheet. Ask questions like:

“How can we show kindness this week?”
“What makes a good friend?”

Simple STEM Activities
Have students build a heart tower with blocks, create a “bridge” for candy hearts to roll down, or do a sink/float experiment using different Valentine-themed objects.

Valentine’s Day is a fun holiday for kindergarteners, and it’s another opportunity to give your learning a theme your students can connect with. The key is keeping things flexible, letting students move at their own pace, and finding ways to make learning feel like part of the day rather than extra work.
